Environmental Investment

Overview of investing in the environmental funds

Today the newspapers are filled with environmental stories - how the environment is impacting society, business and politics. It is also impacting investment, but both the implications of investment and the returns from investment are not felt in the short term and as such are not yet that news worthy.

Environmental funds concentrate on companies which are set to benefit in the longer term from the changes society is going through. Investments are in companies trying to profit from issues such as energy efficiency, forestry, waste management, water, clean energy, climate change, sustainable consumption, infrastructure and carbon.

How environmental funds are managed

An environmental fund can draw from investable companies within the clean energy, water, forestry and carbon themes.

Investor approach to investing in environmental funds

These types of funds are more appropriate for an investor who wants direct exposure to environmental issues without having to decide in which single theme he or she should be in at any one time.

It is also important to realise that environmental companies tend to be smaller growth companies. The implications to an investor are that returns will in theory move up and down at faster rates than other types of investments, particularly over shorter periods of time. Investors thus need to be patient.

It is important to study the Worldwise Investor fact sheets in this theme because the approach of the different investment funds varies widely, from passive to active strategies.
