Why water is such a good investment opportunity

Paul Gaston, Head of UK Sales at Pictet, explains why, in today's economic climate, there's never been a better time to invest in water.

There's never been a better time to invest in waterThe past few years have been tough for advisers. Finding the right investments in today's economic conditions has been difficult. As a result, investors have become cautious; seeking out safer, more reliable places to put their money. That's why water, as an investment theme, should now receive serious consideration.

The biggest user of water globally is agriculture. In fact 70% of all fresh water usage worldwide now goes on agriculture alone. Add to this the growing demand for food that will come from a rapidly expanding population and it's clear that demand for water usage in the future is only going to increase.

On top of this, the vast majority of scientists now agree that climate change is happening; leading to the possibility of water shortages in more and more parts of our world. These three factors mean it is more important than ever for us to use our supplies of fresh water as efficiently and responsibly as possible. This demand for improved water infrastructure and new technologies that help to recycle water or use it in better ways make water the ideal investment opportunity.

Fund context:

Since the Pictet Water Fund was launched on 19 January 2000, the MSCI World index has increased by 17.06% and the Pictet Water Fund has grown by 136.2% (Source: Pictet 13-7-2012).
